MEET QIANYI YANG
Qianyi Yang, is studying to be a human rights lawyer at James Madison University. She graduated from South Lakes High School in 2017 with a GPA of 4.076.
Her fight for human rights is passionate and personal. Her father, instrumental in the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, has been under police surveillance in China for the past 28 years. He is unable to leave China and Qianyi and her mother are not allowed to return. Qianyi Skypes with her father every night and dreams of one day reuniting.
At South Lakes High School, Qianyi took the most rigorous classes offered—IB Math, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, and Honors Virginia Government and History. She volunteered at the Reston Library and Habitat for Humanity in West Virginia. During the summer months, Quanyi held a full-time job at the Reston Children’s Center.
Her counselor, Moira Fleche, wrote “She is one of the most academically motivated students I have worked with in my four years as a counselor.”
